Kill the Director – The Wombats (Popular music)

Kill the Director is a song performed by the band The Wombats

In this unit of work, we will be analyzing this song indepth and focusing on two concepts of music such as Pitch and Dynamics and Expressive Techniques. Go through the list of learning activities listed below (all must be completed).

Creativity/Composition

Step 1: create a Garage Band session on the computers in class

Step 2: once you have opened the session you will find in your student account a folder of various electronic loops, you must drag and drop these loops into your loop folder in garage band

Step 3: once you have dragged and dropped your loops you can begin your composition of creating a one minute jingle inspired from our chosen song. You can use as many loops and tracks to create your desired tune.

Step 4: once you have finished your composition come and get me so I can have a listen to approve your work. And please don’t forget to share your work with others to gain feedback

Aural

Step 1: create a new document in Microsoft office

Step 2: in the next few steps you will listen to a YouTube video from start to finish you will be looking at Pitch and Dynamics and Expressive Techniques for your concepts.

Step 3: after you have listened to the video answer the following questions

1. Identify the overall contour of the piece?

2. Describe the phrases in the piece e.g long,short, symmetrical or uneven?

3. Identify the expressive technique used on the lead electric guitar?

4. describe the dynamic changes in song from start to finish?

Step 4: Once finished save and print out a hard copy and paste it into your books for marking.

Musicology

Step 1: create a new document in Microsoft office

Step 2: you will now begin a research case study of a brief overview of the band The Wombats.

Step 3: your case study will consist of the follow four questions

▪ Write a brief overview of the band?
▪ Define popular music and its sub genres?
▪ Identify the movie that this song was used in?
▪ Discuss and analyse how popular music has changed the 21st century

Step 4: Once finished save and print out a hard copy and paste it into your books for marking.

Performance

Step 1: form a group of four making sure each that each group has one guitarist, one pianist and one drummer.

Step 2: once you have created your diverse group, you will choose any popular song to reinterpret it e.g such a slow melody line, changing the key on the song etc. (this will be done over a double period for enough practice time)

Step 3: once reinterpretation has been completed each group will perform their version of their chosen popular song in front of the class

Step 4: Remember to always have fun!
