End Credits – Hans Zimmer (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides/Film Music) 0:45 to 1:10

End Credits is a song written by  composer Hans Zimmer for the movie Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

In this unit of work, we will be analyzing this song indepth and focusing on three concepts of music such as Pitch, Dynamics and Expressive Techniques and Tone Colour. Go through the list of learning activities listed below (all must be completed)

Creativity/Composition

Step 1: create a Sibelius piano session on the computers in class,

Step 2: once you have opened the session you will find in your student account three pre-made theme templates of:

  • Action
  • Awesome and Majestic
  • Suspense

Step 3: once  you have opened up your chosen them you will compose an 8 bar film theme in the key of C (only using he white notes of the keyboard) using a variety of note values and rest to get your desired effect on your chosen theme.

Step 4: once you have finished your film theme composition come and get me so i can have a listen to approve your work.

Aural

Step 1: create a new document in Microsoft office

Step 2: in the next few steps you will listen to a YouTube video from 0:45 to 1:10 and you will be looking at Pitch, Dymanics and Expressive Techniques and Tone Colour for your concepts.

Step 3: after you have listened to the video answer the following questions

  1. identify the contour of the melody?
  2. identify the range of the excerpt e.g. wide or narrow?
  3. list three expressive techniques and identify the instrument with the technique?
  4. Describe the excerpt in five tone colour words

Step 4: Once finished save and print out a hard copy and paste it into your books for marking.

Musicology

Step 1: Create a new document in Microsoft office.

Step 2: you will now begin a research case study of a brief overview of Hanz Zimmer

Step 3: your case study will consist of the follow four questions

  1. what year did Zimmer compose this popular theme
  2. identify the culture in the excerpt that the guitar is playing and what is the technique used to play the guitar in that manner?
  3. discuss how Zimmer finds inspiration to compose his famous themes
  4. discuss how theme relates to the movie and the characters

Step 4: Once finished save and print out a hard copy and paste it into your books for marking.

Performance

Step 1: select a theme from the list below to play on the keyboard

  • mission impossible theme
  • James Bond
  • Over the Rainbow
  • Jaws theme

Step 2: over the double period practice your choice piece to play in-front of the class towards the end of the lesson.

Step 3: once you have played your piece come and see me for some feedback on how you went.
